VOLUNTEER

Negril Pup Rescue is a fully volunteer-run organization that depends upon the help of others to survive. Both in-person in Jamaica and remotely online, volunteers provide desperately needed support.

CARRY SUPPLIES

Running a rescue takes a lot of treats, pee pads, chew toys and cleaning supplies (among other things). Many of our supporters carry supplies in their checked luggage when traveling to help stock our supply coffers.

ADVOCACY

There are many who visit Jamaica who are saddened by the plight of stray dogs but don’t know that we exist. You can help by becoming an advocate for the rescue – informing others and encouraging their involvement.

Volunteer!

IN-PERSON

There is always something to do around the rescue and any help will alleviate some of the heavy load on Dominique and Les. Plan a day while on vacation to visit and help out and we will gladly welcome your support! Past volunteers have assisted with exercising the dogs, playing and showing them love and attention, feeding them, giving baths, cleaning (not the most fun, but necessary!) and even tasks that fit into their skill sets.  Cari, as seen here, is a dog trainer that visited Jamaica and spent time working with some of our reactive dogs!

Feeling hard core?  Plan a trip to Jamaica for the purpose of volunteering at the rescue. We are working with local lodging partners to develop discounted rates for those who commit to volunteering a specific number of hours during their stay. Picture it. Puppy love and snuggles during the day. Your evening free for the beach, local cuisine, sunsets and the great feeling that comes from doing something good.

REMOTE/ONLINE

Would you believe that a large percentage of the management/support of the rescue happens online in offices and living rooms throughout the United States and Canada? This method of volunteering is an untapped resource for the rescue and is vital to helping the organization to flourish in every way. We are seeking individuals who wish to assist with facilitating rescue operations, fundraising, marketing, organizational tasks, social media management, database management and more. There is so much going on behind the scenes and we could use your support.  Do you have expertise in accounting, travel/tourism or law? We need advice and assistance in these important roles often.  Do you have a skill set that you think would be beneficial to the rescue?  Reach out to us!  We are always grateful for the support of our village!

CHECK WITH YOUR JOB!

  • Nearly 60% of companies offer paid time off (PTO) for employees to volunteer, and an additional 21% plan to offer release time in the next two years.
  • 35% of companies donate $10 per every hour of volunteering services, while 21% of companies offer $25 per hour.

Carry Supplies

There is a long list of supplies and groceries that the rescue uses on a daily basis and still another list of supplies that we need as situations arise. Many of these items are limited, hard to find and prohibitively expensive in Jamaica. Amazon is not an option. Shipping is cost-prohibitive and receiving products through customs is hit or miss. As a result, we rely on our amazing supporters to assist us by carrying supplies in their checked baggage when they travel to Jamaica. We’ve seen some creative ways of making this happen including:

– Finding old suitcases at thrift stores or in Buy Nothing groups on Facebook to fill with supplies and leave behind at the rescue. We turn all of the suitcases into dog beds!

– Filling a soft or hard-sided dog crate with supplies and carrying it as checked baggage on your flight. The crate and supplies will definitely come in handy!

– Creating a personal Amazon wish list of items needed by the rescue and crowdsourcing donations to be packed and carried.

Check with your airline!!  Some airlines offer humanitarian waivers for donation and still others will quietly waive the fee if you let them know that you are bringing a suitcase full of supplies to donate to the rescue. Need a letter legitimizing your request? Just reach out to us and we will supply you with whatever you need to make things easier (and less expensive!). Below is a listing of what is needed and what won’t be used. If you are traveling to Jamaica soon, please reach out to us directly and we will let you know what we currently need the most.

WE ALWAYS NEED:

Heavy Duty Dog Toys (not stuffed)

Zip Ties

ADVOCACY/AWARENESS

We’ve all been there.  On the beach.  At the bar. Out to eat. Talking to our neighbors about where they are from and how much we love Jamaica.  Then, eventually, the conversation turns to some version of:

“I just wish there weren’t so many stray animals.”

This is the perfect moment to help the rescue.  Introduce us to friends. Introduce us to strangers. Let other tourists and animal lovers know about the work that we are doing for the dogs of Negril. Solicit their support.  Encourage them to join us.

We empower you as an Ambassador for the Negril Pup Rescue. Is there a hotel or resort that you stay at or a local business that you visit frequently? Ask if they will display our brochures or make a donation. Purchase a tee or hat in our Rescue Swag shop and wear it proudly. Talk about us in your Facebook groups. Take every opportunity to get our name out there.  The more people who know about us, the more opportunities arise for support and in turn, the more we can accomplish for the dogs.

Talking Points:

What does the rescue do?
In addition to housing over 80 dogs that have been rescued from the streets of Negril, the rescue conducts daily outreach to other animals who are starving, in need of basic medical care like dewormer and mange medication and works with local animal owners to encourage spay/neuter and change attitudes towards animals in general. We also work with our local neighbors who own pets to assist with vet visits and temporary animal care following an accident or injury.
I want to help!! What can I do?
We truly appreciate your enthusiasm and support.  There are many ways that you can help including, but not limited to:

1. Make a donation.  We raise money each week to feed the 80+ dogs in our care and to support our outreach program.  From time to time, we run contests and fun fundraisers to benefit our general fund and finally, there are opportunities to donate to capital projects as they arise.  You can opt for a one-time gift, or even better, make a monthly commitment that is automatically processed each month.

2. Spread the word. Tell your friends and family about the rescue. Let others know when you are on vacation about the dogs of Negril and the challenges facing them and the rescue. Share our posts on your social media and in your resort or Jamaica tourism based groups. Buy a tee shirt or other swag to raise recognition.

3. Host a fundraiser. Use our peer to peer fundraising, Facebook or GoFundMe resources to raise money for the rescue in lieu of birthday or holiday gifts or to commemorate a special occasion. Hold a tag sale. Organize an event.  Reach out to us for ideas and support.

4. Carry supplies. The cost of goods in Jamaica is exhorbitant and many items are not readily available. We rely on the kindness of our supporters to carry much needed supplies to us in their checked luggage when they travel to Jamaica. Some supporters set up Amazon wishlists to have others ship items to their home to be included in their travels. Find a suitcase at a local thrift shop or buy nothing group. Fill it. Check with your airline about fee waivers for nonprofit donations.  Leave the suitcase with us.  We will make a dog bed out of it!

5. Volunteer.  Join us at the rescue for a day (or few) to help with the daily tasks.  Ride along as Les conducts his daily outreach to the strays of Negril. Assist with administrative tasks (both locally and remotely). Join a committee to assist with fundraising, marketing, outreach, advocacy and other tasks. There is so much to do and many hands make light work!

6. Participate in our passive campaigns. On occasion we will offer a way to raise money that doesn’t take any financial commitment on your part – but does require your votes, walking, purchasing the items you usually do, but through an app, and more. Help us out by doing these things.  It costs you nothing and yields big results for the dogs.

7. Check to see if your workplace offers matching donations. This is the easiest way yet to double your money!

Can we visit?
Absolutely yes! Many reach out to us to come by and meet the dogs, bring supplies, learn about the rescue and soak up the puppy love.

Since our daily schedule and situations with the dogs can change from day to day, we ask that you let us know that you are coming to Jamaica and when in a private message or on our Contact page. We will instruct you to reach out to us again once you are in Jamaica and we will be able to set up a mutually agreeable day/time to come by!

Can I adopt one of the dogs locally/to the United States/to Canada?
Of course.  One of the major parts of our mission is giving these dogs the opportunity to have the home and family they deserve. Some of our dogs are with us forever, as they have conditions or behaviors that make them unsuitable for adoption, but there are many others waiting on a forever home. Visit our Adopt page to learn more about the process and cost.
Are you the same organization as Negril Spay Neuter Clinic?
No!  In fact, this is one of the most common misconceptions we face.  While we recognize that Negril Spay Neuter Clinic is doing great work, they are a completely separate organization and have different staff and fundraising objectives. We are not a veterinary clinic and do not provide spay or neuter services. Both organizations are fulfilling a desperate need.
